Effective October 1, most hospitals in southeastern Pennsylvania are reporting patient “falls” and “falls with harm” to the Patient Safety Authority according to common definitions developed in collaboration with the authority and
The Health Care Improvement Foundation. Starting in 2009, the authority will issue quarterly, regional benchmarking reports, including metrics such as mean fall rate per 1,000 patient days, with breakdowns by hospital size and type. Participating hospitals will be able to view their ranking, but not data from other hospitals. By providing meaningful comparative data, the standardized reporting initiative seeks to sustain regional improvements in falls prevention begun in 2007.
